TBT: Caraval by Stephanie Garber

Not sure what there is to say, except that this might’ve not been the book for me.

I didn’t connect with the writing style, the characters felt like cutouts, and I didn’t find myself shocked by the plot twists as much as I felt confused and frustrated. I think there was a lot of “No, it’s been this the whole time!” and “Actually I was wrong before, it’s been this the whole time!” In other words, I got whiplash from how many “surprising” plot twists came up. Which by the way, if something outlandish happens every other chapter, that directly contradicts what previously just happened, then it’s not masterful story telling. In fact, it just serves to prove I can’t trust you as a reader, and it’s not because the characters are being clever, it’s because you’re changing the rules without basis or groundwork just based on whim.

All that is to say, I certainly didn’t appreciate it since I never even had a good grasp of the world. Overall, I was underwhelmed by this book especially when so many people have raved about it. I won’t be continuing with the series, but I’m glad so many people enjoyed it.
