Hello lovely readers! I hope this blog post finds you well. Currently, Misster Reader here is practicing self-quarantining/social-distancing, and it’s been…interesting to say the least.
With COVID-19, the state of the world is a bit scary at the moment (might be the understatement of the year), so I thought we could all use a teensy distraction. I’ve had a lot more reading time on my hands, so I thought it’d be fun to share with you all the books that have sparked my interest these last couple of weeks
Anyways, without further ado, here are some books I’m interested in hopefully reading during these trying times:
*Fair warning my brain still gravitates toward dark content even in dark times 🙃

My Dark Vanessa – This might be the most controversial book on any of my TBR’s, but hey the buzz got me! What can I say? If you’ve been living under a rock, don’t worry I got you. My Dark Vanessa follows a dual timeline perspective from 15 year old and 32 year old Vanessa. When Vanessa was fifteen she had sex with her then forty two year old English teacher Jacob Strane. Now, in the wake of the #MeToo movement, allegations are starting to rise against Strane. Forcing Vanessa to grapple with her hidden past, and whether the love affair was as consensual as she thought it to be.

Bad Blood: Secrets and Lies in a Silicon Valley Startup – With the recent hysteria concerning the Corona virus, my paranoid self decided to watch Pandemic on Netflix. Elizabeth Holmes was briefly mentioned in the first episode, but for some reason the name stuck, and I decided to do the only rational thing: Wikipedia her. From there, it was only a matter of time before I fell into the rabbit hole of everything ranging from her to Theranos and the downfall of the company. Now, to say the least, I’ve become fully obsessed with the situation. More importantly, this book and its author, John Carreyrou, who was largely responsible in exposing all the lies and corruption involving Theranos.

The Two Lives of Lydia Bird – I read Josie Silver’s previous book a couple of years ago, and ended up not quite liking it. However, my reasons for that were more to do with the subject matter (cheating with your best friend’s boyfriend) than the actual writing itself. So when Book of the Month made her sophomore novel a pick, I couldn’t help but be drawn in by the pretty cover once more. I’m only human, after all.

Imaginary Friend – As you may have already heard, from every other book reviewer’s spiel on this book, this is finally Chbosky’s second book since his massive hit The Perks of Being a Wallflower. Sadly, I’ve been sitting on this novel since around September. I’m not going to lie to you: the page count scares me. That’s right, Chbosky went from a mere 100+ page novella to a daunting 900+ page horror monster. However, I figured this quarantine was a good time as any to tackle it once and for all.

Eleanor Oliphant Is Completely Fine – Truthfully, I don’t know much about this book, which is kind of lame to you readers, but I kind of want to keep it that way. All I know is that this features a socially-awakard girl dealing with anxiety, there’s an old person involved somehow, and I’m guessing there might be a romance (not with the elder!) roped in somewhere. I’ve only ever heard good things about this novel, and I figured my tbr could use some levity amongst all these heavy handed books.

The Seven Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle – It’s a bit sad how long this book has been lying on my shelf unread. In my defense, I’ve heard this is a quite complicated read. Basically, a woman, I presume to be called Evelyn Hardcastle, is murdered at a gala party. Our protagonist is then set out to uncover who the murderer is by reliving the night again and again, but each time in a different guest’s body. It’s the sort of book that requires your full and upmost attention in order to figure out the culprit, so what better time than this? When all I want is to forget what’s going on in the outside world.
Well those are all the books folks! I’d be interested in hearing what you’re reading, or would recommend I read while stuck indoors. ❤
I know it’s a difficult time for us all especially since everything is so uncertain and seems so infinite. But as hard as it may be, I urge you to focus on the things you can control: like social distancing, how you spend your time, and more importantly your attitude.
Some things that have helped me these last couple of weeks have been:
- staying off of social media
- cleaning
- getting dressed everyday
- working out at home (endorphins baby!)
- finding new recipes
- spending quality time with those I’m in isolation with
- writing
- drawing
- and of course, reading.
I know this is all easier said than done, but I have full faith in the universe and all of you lovely people out there. So keep yo distance (!), stay hydrated, maybe learn a new dance, and take care ❤
