Oh the blessings.
In case you didn’t know, I’ve been on a book buying ban for a while. Generally speaking, I like my number of unread books to be under the number 40. (Although, as of late I’m thinking of lowering that number to 30) Regardless, there were a couple of weeks in which I went over that number and started stressing out. I by no means think that’s a standard everyone should hold, but to someone who’s a control freak like me, a healthy minimum is necessary for me to feel sane.
I started to take a hard look at my buying habits, and realized I wasn’t buying books so much because I’d been anticipating/wanting them for a while. Rather, I was buying books based on bargains and low prices. I fell into the trap of Book Outlet thinking I was saving money by buying large amounts of discounted books. When in reality I wasn’t saving any extra cash if I was buying books I hadn’t wanted in the first place.
So with this resolve, I went on a book buying ban. I read the books on my shelf instead of looking for new ones to fill said shelf. In the beginning it was hard, because I found that a lot of my joy came from the act of buying. When I acknowledged this I was able to work on myself, and started to find joy in the act of reading and lowering the number on my physical TBR.
When I reached my desired goal I decided to treat myself by buying a few books that I’d been wanting to read for a while. Let’s start with my Book of The Month picks:
Daisy Jones & The Six by Taylor Jenkins Reid : This next bestseller by Reid chronologically follows the journey of Daisy Jones and her famous band leading to why they broke up. It’s told through numerous interviews all the while capturing the era of sex, drugs, and rock & roll.
Hunger: A Memoir of (My) Body by Roxane Gay: In a collection of brutally honest essays, Gay explores her relationship with food, weight, and identity.
Then, came these four lovely books from Barnes & Noble:
The 7 1/2 Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle by Stuart Turton: In this Clue style mystery, Evelyn Hardcastle is murdered at a gala party. Meanwhile, our narrator is forced to relive the event in the the body of a different attendee each night in hopes of deciphering who’s done it.
Behind Her Eyes by Sarah Pinborough: Single mother Louise decides to take a night out on the town. In a bar she meets a man named David who she feels a connection to and eventually kisses. However, when she arrives to work the next day she find out David is her new boss, and he is very much married to a woman named Adele. As Louise is drawn into their orbit, secrets start to unravel including why David seems so possessive and why Adele is so frightened of him.
Dark Matter by Blake Crouch: In this Sci-fi Thriller, we follow college professor Jason Dessen as he’s kidnapped and taken into a parallel universe where he’d a celebrated genius. In a world where his wife is no longer his wife, and his son doesn’t exist, Jason must figure out which reality is true and how he’ll get back home.
Wow, my second book from Reid this month. Can you tell I want to read her entire body of work?
One True Loves by Taylor Jenkins Reid: Emma has a happy life traveling the world with her high school sweetheart Jesse Lehrer. That is until he disappears in a tragic helicopter accident. Now widow, Emma must start anew as she moves back home, takes on a calmer lifestyle, and finds love again with childhood friend Sam. Everything appears to be back on course until three years later she receives a call from what was supposed to be her deceased husband. Faced with a difficult reality of having both a husband and fiancé, Emma must decide her one true love is.
Well, that’s it! As this is my first book haul on the blog, I’m still trying to decide how lengthy I want them to be. Please bear with me while I figure out which style of format is best, and feel free to tell me if you prefer the short synapses or would rather have it be short and sweet. Also, please tell me which books you’ve bought recently or are desperate to get!
